Thoughts on "Downfall"

Thoughts on movie Downfall from last class:
  • seemed to be disconnected from his bunker
  • everything seem to collapse once he was gone because no one seem to know what to do without him...as if he were the brain and the limbs couldn't function without it
  • this is the problem with having a government built on one authority or a dictatorship
  • interesting how the secretary at the end commented on how it she couldn't use being too young as an excuse because you should question why things happen and know what's going on around you no matter how old you are
  • when the child sees the guy shot next to him in the bunker, its as if it that split second he grows up, and war is no longer a make believe game
  • it was interesting to see how those in control freaked out and lost control when he was gone, but the elders/kids were accepting of the defeat and more passive
  • the way the film was shot, the way the camera moved through the corridors and was constantly close up to the characters, made you feel like part of the film
  • the color being in black and white made it seem more historical and capturing a piece of history

Sunday Noon Picture

End of the celebration

This picture was taken at noon on Sunday after the Homecoming game. I had gone with my boyfriend to take his little brother to see the floats on Bowman field. He was disappointed to find that most of the floats had been ripped apart or torn down. Little kids love the bright colors of floats and exploring around them. With this image you can feel the emotion of sadness caused by him seeing the float torn down. You can't see his face which makes viewer's have to fill in what they think his emotion would be. A little kid makes the emotion more real because of their excitement and curiousity of the floats more so then a college student or adult would be. They are innocent and don't understand why people tore down the floats that had been there a day before. The bright colors in the picture contrast with the sadness of the situation. The colors of the float show that it is Clemson.

Photo Remix

The remixed photo of the greatwall of China on the border of the US and Mexico represents all the problems we've been having with illegal immigration and playing on the fact that some believe we should put up a barrier.
The remixed phot of Colbert as Lincoln represents Colbert saying he might run for president and "getting in over his head" and taking on more than he can handle.
The remixed photo of George Bush as Medusa's head with other Republican candidates as the heads of snakes that makeup her hair represents how there doesn't appear to be a leader emerging among the Republican party.

Class Comic

This is the cartoon we worked on in class. We fed off of how upset students were about losing a day of fall break and took the idea to the extreme. We used darker colors under the desk and made the computers 3D to add depth. There is a Clemson paw on the hat and tshirt to show the students are Clemson students. We copied and pasted images of the webmail page to show the viewer what they are looking at. The font of the comic is the same as webmail to convey that it is an email message. There are red exclamation points above the students heads to represent anger and absurdity of the message. We could have made the comic better but under the time constraints we had, I think we did a good job.

Week 3

I have chosen a group of pictures for the slideshow. I am now working on what will happen while the pictures are running. I am deciding between music and voice or both. I might start with music and fade to voice or vice versa.

Week 2

This week I have been going through 3 cds worth of pictures deciding which ones to use in my slideshow and which ones will best present the message I want. I am starting to narrow them down and figure how many I want in the slide show as well as how long I think an effective show will be.

Spiderman

Spiderman opens by flipping through a comic book to reference that the character/movie is based on a comic book series. Your eyes then follow the names of the people that produced the movie through a series of spiderwebs. The spiderwebs are somewhat realistic but still look like they are out of a comic book. The letters of the words are in the same font and colors of the title (red and white). The words are tossed from web to web to make you feel as if you are Spiderman. The words are in the center of the webs to represent where a spider would be. Then you notice that city buildings are now behind the webs and you feel as if you're flying from building to building by spiderweb. I think this effect is used to represent the way Spiderman travels through the city by attaching spiderwebs to the builidings. The last spiderweb then turns into a real spiderweb as a transistion to the movie beginning. This represents the comic book series turning from cartoon into real life characters. The entire opening sequence is exciting and intense and the music adds to the suspense that you would feel flipping through the pages of a comic book to find out what happens next.

Week 1

I interviewed my Dad to get a better understanding of why I am doing the project. I am going to aim the slideshow at stores like Lowes, Home Depot, etc as well as churches and the general community to help donate money and materials. I also began to get picture together from the past 3 years.

Postcards

The death penalty has been around for centuries. This article discusses how it is portrayed to the public. The part that shocked me the most was how people used to take pictures of the "lynchings" and send them around on postcards. A question I might ask is why do you think they sent them around on postcards? Why didn't they put them in the papers? This is appalling to me that people could be so cruel and then boast about their actions by displaying them on postcards as if its a norm. Another questions would be why are their pictures of the death penalty? Are they supposed to evoke feelings of justice being served or pity for the unknown of whethere the person was innocent? Are these pictures supposed victimize the person being killed or make them seem like a hero?
